Ok so that was slightly depressing. Hopefully I'm walking straight into a big late April Fools trap but seeing bands/artists live can be one of the most incredible, visceral, thought provoking and powerful experiences we have available to us. Yes most gigs are merely good, some boring, large venues are expensive and souless, but when it works, the stars align you can't beat it. Some sweat and a lighter wallet are small prices to pay. First great band I ever saw was Foo Fighters playing their first album at Brixton Academy, aged 15, I left with one shoe and my friend actually vomitted from excitement ; ) Admittedly that was less good for the people in front.
Seeing Arcade Fire for the first time, Public Enemy at Hackney Empire and giving Flava Flav a hand shake, being one of about 10 people having the time of their lives at a Dr Dog show, watching the Pixies reform at Kentish Town Forum, Robert Belfour, blues legend, at The Spitz just before it closed down, LCD soundsystem and The Black Keys at the Scala. MIA, 4am at Manchester Warehouse Project..... too many good memories.. It's not really the venue that counts but each one adds a subtle flavour to the mix with unique pro's and cons. As long as they're not trying to rip fans off I think it's shame for any to be closing.

c37892e3-f5eb-4e67-9e37-9f7a00d94308Yeah I like Shepherd's Bush too. Especially the first floor, where I can have a nice sit down. I know that makes me sound old, but I prefer that to having a stranger sweat bath.

76bc6e82-a362-4fdc-b5a2-9f73011efd6bwhat about the lovely shepard's bush empire? i am seeing anna calvi there for £15 / ticket including booking fee, and it is beautiful inside to boot. it is 02, but the venue could hardly be described as faceless.
