Being blunt - you're either talented or not and luck you can't do an awful lot about (apart from making sure you're in the right place at the right time) but being professional is something everybody can be. And it's free, it doesn't matter where you come from, what your surname is or who your father is - anyone can be it and those artists that are (in my experience) are the ones that achieve and make good careers out of it.
If you aren't professional, you better make sure you're uber-talented or else the industry just isn't going to be interested, it just won't have the patience to deal with you for more than one gig and you'll bounce around pissing people off until there's no one left to piss off.
